Hajipur/Patna: Construction contractor Ram Naresh Rai was shot dead during his morning walk in the Digghi Naya Tola area under Hajipur Sadar police station on Thursday, triggering panic in the locality.
According to reports, the attackers fired five rounds at close range before fleeing the scene. Rai died on the spot.
CCTV Captures Attack
CCTV footage from near the scene has emerged as a key lead in the investigation.
The footage reportedly shows Rai walking along the road when four men travelling on two motorcycles approached him and stopped. After speaking to him briefly, the men appeared to alarm him, prompting Rai to run towards a nearby wooded area.
Two of the motorcycle riders then got off and chased him. The footage reportedly captures the pursuit before Rai was shot.
The attackers fled immediately after the shooting.
Police are examining the CCTV footage and other technical evidence in an effort to identify the suspects and establish the motive for the killing.
Family Inconsolable
Rai reportedly went for a morning walk regularly and was usually accompanied by five or six people. On Thursday, however, he had gone out alone.
After news of the shooting spread, local residents gathered at the scene. Family members initially took the body to Sadar Hospital but later brought it back home without a post-mortem examination.
Police reached the scene after receiving information about the incident and began investigating.
Rai lived with his parents, while his wife stayed in Patna to oversee the education of their only son. The family has been left devastated by the killing.
Police said the investigation is examining all possible angles, including the circumstances surrounding the attack and the motive behind it.
