Patna: Hartalika Teej will be observed on Monday, September 14, 2026, during the Tritiya Tithi of the Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month. The date is determined by the Udaya Tithi, or the lunar day prevailing at sunrise.
Married women traditionally observe a Nirjala fast, abstaining from food and water, and pray for their husbands’ longevity, marital well-being and family prosperity. Unmarried women also observe the fast with the belief that it may help them find a suitable life partner.
According to astrologer Acharya Rakesh Jha, the Tritiya Tithi will continue until 7:28am on September 14. As the day begins with Tritiya at sunrise, Hartalika Teej will be observed on September 14 under the Udaya Tithi rule.
Puja Can Be Performed Throughout The Day
Devotees can perform the Hartalika Teej worship from the morning until late at night, according to the traditional observance. Women create or arrange clay idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and worship them with prescribed rituals, Vedic mantras and offerings.
The fast is traditionally observed from one sunrise to the next. During the period, devotees also listen to the Hartalika Teej Katha and chant mantras dedicated to Shiva and Parvati.
Religious Significance
The festival is associated with the penance of Goddess Parvati, who is believed to have undertaken severe austerities to seek Lord Shiva as her husband. According to the religious tradition cited by Jha in the context of the Linga Purana, Parvati performed penance while giving up food and water.
The story forms the basis of the festival’s emphasis on devotion, faith and penance. Married women traditionally associate the fast with their husbands’ long life and continued marital well-being, while unmarried women observe it with the wish for a suitable groom.
Auspicious Yogas And Muhurtas
According to Jha, the combination of Tritiya and Chaturthi on September 14 is associated in religious tradition with Gauri-Ganesh Yoga and Matru-Putra Yoga. The transition from Tritiya to Chaturthi is considered significant for worship.
The listed auspicious periods for September 14 are:
