Patna: Many people begin their mornings without food, but doctors and dieticians warn that prolonged fasting after waking can cause more harm than good. They recommend eating at least a light meal within an hour of brushing your teeth to avoid stomach upset, fatigue and other long-term health issues.
Since the body goes without food for eight to nine hours during sleep, skipping breakfast further lowers blood sugar levels. This leads to lethargy, irritability and poor concentration, particularly among students and office workers. Experts explain that glucose is essential for proper brain function, and without it, productivity suffers throughout the day.
“Breakfast should not only be tasty, but also balanced with protein, fibre, vitamins and carbohydrates,” a Patna-based dietician said. Traditional options such as roti-paratha with vegetables provide lasting energy, but if cooked with too much ghee or oil can cause sluggishness. Lighter meals such as upma, poha or oats are easier to digest and can aid weight management, though they should be prepared with sufficient nutrients.
Doctors also caution that skipping breakfast increases the likelihood of overeating at lunch, slows metabolism and promotes fat accumulation, which can lead to weight gain. Staying hungry for long periods in the morning can further trigger acidity, indigestion and, in the long run, even ulcers.
“Eating the right breakfast every day is not just a cultural habit, it is a medical necessity,” one physician explained. “Your first meal sets the tone for the entire day.”
