Patna: The health department is on high alert regarding the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory infection with symptoms similar to Covid-19, Health Minister Mangal Pandey has announced. Guidelines for the prevention and management of the infection have been issued, alongside instructions to strengthen health infrastructure across the state.
HMPV, a common respiratory virus, has been linked to several outbreaks globally. In 2024, Malaysia reported 327 cases of the infection, while India recorded nine confirmed cases of HMPV among 714 severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) patients in December. The minister stressed the importance of adhering to preventive measures similar to those used for Covid-19, including regular handwashing, maintaining physical distance from infected individuals, covering the mouth while coughing or sneezing, and sanitising personal items.
“All health institutions have been instructed to intensify surveillance for influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe respiratory infections,” Pandey said. He added that hospitals have been directed to activate flu corners, train health workers in managing HMPV cases, and implement infection control protocols. Measures are also in place to ensure the availability of essential resources, including Covid-19 medicines, testing kits, ventilators, and oxygen supplies, to mitigate any potential threat.
The minister urged people to seek immediate medical attention if respiratory symptoms appear, particularly among vulnerable groups such as young children, elderly individuals over 60, and those with weakened immune systems.
As there is currently no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment for HMPV, symptom-based care remains the mainstay of management. This includes staying hydrated, getting adequate rest, and providing oxygen support in severe cases. “The state government is fully committed to preventing the spread of this infection and strengthening health services to protect the public,” Pandey said.
