Patna: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave and warm night warning for several districts of southern and south-central Bihar, forecasting a significant rise in temperatures between April 22 and April 25.
According to the Patna Meteorological Centre, a combination of upper air cyclonic circulation and low humidity in the lower troposphere is expected to trigger extreme heat conditions across large parts of the state. Daytime temperatures may rise by 2 to 4°C above normal, while nighttime temperatures are likely to remain higher than usual—leading to what meteorologists classify as ‘warm nights’.
While no major change in minimum temperature is expected, the combination of heat and low moisture levels means the felt temperature—how hot it actually feels—will be significantly higher than the recorded values.
Vulnerable Groups at Risk
The IMD has cautioned that the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable during this period. People engaged in outdoor labour, especially during peak daytime hours, are also at heightened risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and dehydration.
Wildlife and livestock, too, are likely to be affected, with heat stress posing serious threats to both flora and fauna.
Public Advised to Take Precautions
To mitigate the risks, the Patna Meteorological Centre has issued a set of advisories:
- Avoid direct exposure to the sun; stay in shaded or cool areas whenever possible.
- Hydrate frequently with water and natural drinks like buttermilk, lemon water, and rice water.
- Wear protective clothing such as hats or use umbrellas; keep the body cool with damp cloths over the neck and face when outside.
- Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the peak heat hours of the day.
As Bihar enters the peak of summer, officials are closely monitoring conditions and advising preparedness to avoid heatwave-related health emergencies.
