Patna: Bihar is experiencing a severe weather fluctuation as a heatwave alert has been issued for four districts, even as thunderstorms and rainfall are predicted in 34 districts across the state. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Rohtas, Aurangabad, Arwal, and Bhojpur are expected to see maximum temperatures exceeding 42°C on Saturday.
Rohtas recorded the highest temperature at 42.2°C, making it the hottest district in the state. Gaya followed with 41.0°C, Chapra recorded 40.8°C, and the state capital Patna experienced a high of 40.4°C, combined with intense humidity. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for these heatwave-prone districts, urging residents to stay indoors during peak sunshine hours and avoid exposure to hot winds.
Senior meteorologist S.K. Patel explained the current discomfort: “There is high moisture content in the lower levels of the atmosphere, and the wind speed is quite low. This combination is intensifying the feeling of heat and humidity.”
Thunderstorms and Rain in 34 Districts
In contrast to the heatwave warnings, the IMD has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rain and lightning in 34 districts, including Patna, Nalanda, Gaya, and Muzaffarpur. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h are also expected. A yellow alert has been issued for these areas as well, warning residents to take precautions, especially during lightning strikes.
The IMD has advised people not to shelter under trees or remain in open areas during thunderstorms. It has urged citizens to follow local authority warnings and adopt safety measures.
When Will Relief Arrive?
The IMD estimates that the monsoon may enter Bihar between June 15 and 17, potentially bringing some relief. However, lasting respite from the heat is only expected after continuous rainfall for two to three days, which would help bring down temperatures by 5 to 6 degrees.
For now, the next 48 hours are likely to remain hot and humid across most parts of the state.
