Patna: A minor accused in the broad daylight shooting near DAV Public School in Danapur was injured in a police encounter late Friday night after allegedly attempting to escape custody and opening fire on officers near Seedhi Ghat in Patna.
The accused, identified as Vivek Kumar, reportedly less than 18 years old, had surrendered to Danapur police earlier in the day in connection with the murder of 22-year-old Shravan Kumar, who was gunned down near D Ram DAV Public School on Gola Road.
According to police, the teenager confessed during interrogation that the weapon used in the murder was buried in the sand near Seedhi Ghat. A team of officers escorted him to the site to recover the firearm. However, in a dramatic turn, the accused retrieved the pistol and opened fire on the officers in a bid to flee. In retaliation, the police fired back, injuring the accused in the leg.
“He was immediately rushed to PMCH for treatment,” a senior police officer said. “The situation was brought under control quickly, and no police personnel were injured.” A forensic team was dispatched to the scene to collect ballistic evidence.
The incident comes just hours after a similar confrontation unfolded in Muzaffarpur, where another wanted criminal, Rahul alias Rider, was shot in the leg during an attempted escape after snatching a service pistol from a police officer in Saraiya.
The Danapur shooting on Friday morning had sparked shock and anger among residents, with locals questioning the safety situation in the area. Shravan Kumar’s killing had appeared to be a targeted attack, though police are still investigating the motive.
Police officials have confirmed that Vivek Kumar was the main accused in the case and that his age and background are being verified, as he is currently being treated as a juvenile suspect.
