Patna: In a heartfelt recognition of those working tirelessly to keep Patna clean, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) is honouring its sanitation workers with special celebrations, including cake-cutting ceremonies and cleanliness pledges. These workers, many of whom are women and elderly, have been at the forefront of the city’s transformation, ensuring that garbage-sensitive points (GVPs) are eliminated and that public spaces remain clean.
The initiative is part of a broader cleanliness awareness campaign being held across 19 locations in the city, with participation from ward councillors, sanitation workers, and local residents. The campaign, which runs until 18 February, aims to reinforce the message of collective responsibility under the motto “My City, My Responsibility.”
Patna’s sanitation efforts have yielded remarkable results. Once struggling with 658 garbage-sensitive points, the city is now striving towards becoming completely garbage-free. Door-to-door waste collection, road sweeping, and community awareness drives have played a crucial role in this transformation.
Among those being recognised is Kala Malik, a 55-year-old sanitation worker from Kankarbagh who has become an inspiration for her peers. Since joining PMC in 2018, she has led by example, ensuring her designated area remains clean while also encouraging others to take ownership of their surroundings. Despite being illiterate, she has emerged as a guiding force, motivating her team and engaging citizens in cleanliness efforts.
The campaign is not just about cleaning the streets but also about changing mindsets. Residents are being encouraged to take a cleanliness oath, pledging to keep their neighbourhoods free from litter. By honouring its sanitation workers and fostering community participation, Patna is not just aiming for a cleaner city but also ensuring that those who keep it clean are valued and respected.
