Patna: The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Regional Office, Patna, in collaboration with Bihar Museum, will organise “Bhikhari Ke Rang” under its Horizon Series on July 10 at 5 pm in the Bihar Museum auditorium. The programme will commemorate the death anniversary of celebrated Bhojpuri playwright, folk artist and social commentator Bhikhari Thakur.

According to ICCR Patna, the event aims to highlight Bhikhari Thakur’s contribution to Indian theatre, folk traditions and social awareness through performances and discussions. The Horizon Series is an ICCR initiative under the Ministry of External Affairs that promotes India’s cultural heritage through lectures, performances, exhibitions and public engagement.

Remembering Bhikhari Thakur’s Legacy

Born on December 18, 1887, Bhikhari Thakur is widely known as the “Shakespeare of Bhojpuri” for his contribution to Bhojpuri literature and theatre. His works explored themes such as migration, caste discrimination, women’s dignity, social justice, dignity of labour and human values through folk theatre, music and storytelling.

His best-known play, Bidesiya, depicts the social and emotional impact of migration, a subject that continues to resonate with families across Bihar. ICCR said his writings remain relevant for their engagement with contemporary social issues while preserving traditional folk culture.

Lecture And Musical Tribute

The programme will be attended by Prof. (Dr.) Virendra Narayan Yadav, Member of the Bihar Legislative Council, as the chief guest. He is also the editor of Bhikhari Thakur Rachnāvalī, a compilation of Bhikhari Thakur’s literary works. Smt. Swadha Rizvi, IFS, Regional Director of ICCR Patna, along with other dignitaries, will also be present.

The event will feature a lecture titled “Bhikhari Thakur Hone Ka Matlab” by theatre artist and scholar Shrikant Kishore, retired Inspector General of CISF. The session will examine Bhikhari Thakur’s role as a cultural thinker whose works continue to shape public discourse on social issues.

Folk Performances By IPTA Artists

The evening will also include “Raag-Sur”, a musical tribute presented by the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA), Bihar. The performance will showcase folk songs and theatrical compositions associated with Bhikhari Thakur’s legacy, including selections from Beti Bechwa, Bhai Birodh and Dularua.

The performances will be presented by Nagendra Nath Pandey and team (Ara IPTA), Rameshwar Singh Gop and team (Ekma IPTA), Ashok Singh, and Rajendra Prasad Yadav and team (Dighwara IPTA).

Open Invitation To The Public

ICCR Patna has invited scholars, artists, students, theatre enthusiasts, media representatives and members of the public to attend the programme. According to the organisers, the event aims to provide an opportunity to engage with Bihar’s folk traditions while reflecting on Bhikhari Thakur’s enduring contribution to Indian cultural and social history.
