Kanpur: The world of words took centre stage at IIT Kanpur as the institute hosted a Cryptic Crossword Challenge during its annual literary festival, Alfaaz. Organised by Extra-C in collaboration with the institute’s Literary Society, the event drew an enthusiastic crowd of puzzle lovers for an afternoon of wit, logic, and linguistic flair.
The challenge was conducted and mentored by noted crossword setter Vinayak Ekbote, whose engaging style and expert insights elevated the workshop and competition alike. Participants described the experience as intellectually stimulating, testing not only vocabulary but also creativity, reasoning, and teamwork.
The event’s smooth execution was credited to the Literary Society’s student organisers — Ishaan, Anika, Nikhil, and Aryavart — who ensured seamless coordination and lively participation.
After several gripping rounds, the winners were announced: Shikhar and Rattandeep took the top spot, followed by Spandan and Achyuth as runners-up, and Enakshi and Saamya in third place.
Students praised the challenge for its clever grid design and dynamic atmosphere, highlighting how it encouraged lateral thinking and collaboration.
Part of the wider Alfaaz festival — which celebrates the art of expression through debates, poetry, quizzes, and more — the Cryptic Crossword Challenge reaffirmed IIT Kanpur’s commitment to nurturing creativity and analytical excellence within its vibrant literary community.
