Patna: A one-day workshop on intellectual property rights (IPR) was organised at the Indian Institute of Technology Patna to raise awareness among start-ups, innovators and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The programme was conducted by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises – Development Institute, Patna, in collaboration with the Incubation Centre at IIT Patna and the DPIIT IPR Chair. The initiative aimed to help participants understand how protecting intellectual property can strengthen businesses and support economic growth.
The workshop began with a ceremonial lighting of the lamp by senior officials and faculty members. Speakers underlined that intellectual property is no longer just a legal concept but a powerful business tool. Prof Nalin Bharti explained the objectives of the national intellectual property outreach mission and said India must focus on commercialising innovations rather than only increasing the number of patent filings.
Dr Rochak Rathore informed participants that UDYAM registration is mandatory for MSMEs to access government scheme benefits. He added that MSMEs can avail substantial subsidies for filing intellectual property applications both in India and internationally. This, he said, can significantly reduce costs for small businesses and encourage them to protect their ideas.
Prof T N Singh highlighted that in today’s globalised environment, clarity in ownership and funding-related rights is essential to avoid future disputes. He stressed that true success lies in turning innovation into market value. Speakers also cited examples such as Basmati rice and Darjeeling Tea to explain how geographical indication (GI) tags protect traditional products and preserve their economic value.
Dr Sudhir Kumar shared that the Incubation Centre at IIT Patna has supported around 200 start-ups over the past decade, with nearly 70 currently generating revenue. These start-ups have secured funding of about Rs 80 crore, filed 44 patents and received 22 patent grants. Organisers said the workshop provided a valuable platform for entrepreneurs to learn about patents, trademarks, copyrights, industrial designs and geographical indications, reinforcing the importance of intellectual property in driving innovation and national development.
