Patna: The Government of India has begun preparations for the Census 2027, confirming that a total of 33 questions will be asked to households as part of the nationwide exercise.
Officials said the clarification comes amid rumours circulating on social media about the nature and number of questions. The census aims to gather detailed data on population, housing conditions and access to basic amenities, which will be used to guide future development policies.
For the first time, citizens will be able to participate through a self-enumeration process. Individuals can submit their details online between April 17 and May 1. This will be followed by a door-to-door survey conducted by government enumerators from May 2 to May 31.
Authorities said it will be mandatory for residents to provide accurate information during both phases.
The questionnaire has been divided into four broad categories, covering family details, housing conditions, access to utilities and ownership of household assets.
Family-related questions will include information such as household size, number of members, name and gender of the head of the family, caste, housing status and number of rooms.
Another section focuses on water, sanitation and energy, including sources of drinking water, availability, type of toilet, wastewater disposal, cooking fuel and access to electricity and kitchen facilities.
Questions on housing will examine structural aspects such as materials used for floors, walls and roofs, the purpose of the house and its overall condition.
The final section relates to household assets, covering ownership of items such as television, internet access, mobile phones, vehicles and other equipment.
Officials said the data collected will provide a comprehensive picture of living conditions across the country and help ensure that welfare schemes reach intended beneficiaries more effectively.
