Patna: The Indian government has launched a major crackdown on online gaming platforms that allow users to play games for cash rewards. The new rules, which officially came into effect on May 1, are being described as one of the biggest regulatory changes the country’s gaming industry has seen in recent years. Authorities say the aim is to protect people from financial losses, improve child safety and stop illegal gaming applications from operating freely in the country.
Over the past few years, online gaming apps have become extremely popular across India, especially among young users. Many of these platforms encouraged people to deposit money and compete for cash prizes. While some users treated these games as entertainment, several complaints also emerged about people losing large amounts of money, becoming addicted to gaming and falling into financial trouble. The government now believes stricter regulation is necessary to control the growing risks linked to such platforms.
Under the new system, the government has divided the online gaming sector into three separate categories — Money Gaming, Competitive Esports and Casual Gaming. Officials believe this classification will help authorities understand what type of services each platform is offering and make it easier to identify rule violations. Special attention is being given to games that involve real-money transactions and prize winnings, as these have remained the most controversial part of the industry.
To strengthen monitoring, the government has created a new body called the Online Gaming Authority of India. This organisation will supervise gaming platforms, review company operations and approve new games before they are launched in the market. According to the new guidelines, companies must obtain approval within 90 days before introducing any new game. Officials say this move is meant to stop fake and illegal gaming apps that have been operating without proper checks for years.
The new rules also place strong emphasis on the safety of children and regular players. Gaming companies are now required to introduce strict age-verification systems so minors cannot easily access games involving money. Features such as parental controls, spending limits and gaming-time restrictions have also been made compulsory. The government says these measures are necessary to reduce cases of gaming addiction and prevent families from suffering financial losses caused by excessive gaming.
The crackdown will also affect social media influencers and online advertisements. Influencers will no longer be allowed to promote banned gaming apps or unapproved platforms. In recent years, many gaming companies gained popularity through aggressive promotions by influencers on social media. Under the new rules, such advertising could face strict penalties. Esports organisations have also been brought under regulation and will now need official registration that will remain valid for 10 years.
Experts believe the new regulations could completely change the future of India’s online gaming industry. Illegal platforms and apps based mainly on cash rewards are expected to face the biggest challenges.
