Patna: The Bihar government on Thursday finalised the allocation of portfolios following the expansion of the cabinet led by Samrat Choudhary, with the appointment of Nishant Kumar as health minister emerging as the most closely watched decision.
Nishant Kumar, son of former chief minister Nitish Kumar, has been inducted into the cabinet for the first time and entrusted with the Health Department — one of the government’s most significant portfolios.
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Sinha has been assigned the Agriculture Department.
Key Portfolio For First-Time Minister
Nishant Kumar only recently entered active politics after years away from public political life.
Political observers said assigning him the Health Ministry immediately after his induction into government signals the JD(U)’s effort to project a new generation of leadership within the party.
The department remains one of Bihar’s most politically sensitive sectors, with issues related to healthcare infrastructure, shortages of doctors and quality of public health services continuing to dominate policy debates.
Analysts said Nishant Kumar would face major administrative challenges, including improving hospital management and strengthening healthcare delivery systems across the state.
His appointment has also generated enthusiasm among JD(U) workers, many of whom view his induction as part of the party’s long-term leadership planning.

Agriculture Portfolio For Vijay Sinha
The Agriculture Department has been handed to former deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, a senior BJP leader who has previously held several key organisational and governmental responsibilities.
Agriculture remains central to Bihar’s economy, with a large section of the population dependent on farming and allied activities for livelihood.
Officials said the department is expected to focus on issues including irrigation infrastructure, farmers’ income, seed distribution and crop procurement mechanisms.
The government is also preparing to introduce technology-driven initiatives and new schemes aimed at modernising agricultural practices.
