Patna: Indian Railways has drawn up an ambitious plan to expand train operating capacity in 48 major cities across the country by 2030, responding to steadily rising passenger numbers and growing freight demand.
Under the initiative, five key cities in Bihar — Patna, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga and Gaya — have been identified for major infrastructure upgrades aimed at easing congestion at busy stations and improving punctuality and passenger experience.
According to Indian Railways, the programme will focus on strengthening existing infrastructure through the construction of new platforms, expansion of terminals and an increase in stabling and pit lines, allowing more trains to be operated simultaneously. Modern signalling systems, additional tracks and upgraded yard facilities also form a central part of the plan.

Officials at the Ministry of Railways said the strategy goes beyond main city stations, with proposals to develop new terminals in surrounding areas. This is expected to distribute traffic more evenly, reducing pressure on central stations while benefiting both suburban commuters and long-distance travellers.
The rollout will be phased, with some measures implemented in the short term and larger projects scheduled over the medium and long term. Railway authorities say the objective is to future-proof the network, ensuring sufficient capacity to handle passenger growth and freight movement in the years ahead.
