Patna: Jan Suraaj has turned its attention to upcoming elections after winning the Bankipur Assembly by-election, with the party preparing to contest Legislative Council seats and strengthen its organisation ahead of next year’s Panchayat elections.
State president Manoj Bharti discussed the party’s upcoming strategy with workers at the Jan Suraaj office in Patna. Key decisions on electoral participation and organisational expansion are expected at the party’s executive committee meeting, after which a formal announcement will be made.
Prashant Kishor Likely To Tour Bihar In September
Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor is expected to undertake another tour of Bihar from September, according to the proposed programme.
The tour is likely to cover districts, villages and towns, with the party planning to use it to strengthen its grassroots organisation and prepare for upcoming electoral contests.
Kishor had earlier travelled across Bihar through a padyatra before the Assembly elections, meeting people in different parts of the state.
Membership Drive Planned From October
Jan Suraaj is preparing for a statewide membership campaign from October. The drive is expected to continue for around three months, with party workers tasked with expanding the organisation from villages to districts.
The party plans to focus on increasing its membership and developing local leadership as it prepares for the next phase of electoral activity.
Jan Suraaj Eyes Eight MLC Seats
The party is also preparing to contest eight Legislative Council seats representing graduate and teacher constituencies. The terms of the four Graduate and four Teacher seats are scheduled to expire in November 2026.
The constituencies include Patna Graduate, Patna Teachers, Darbhanga Graduate, Darbhanga Teachers, Tirhut Graduate, Tirhut Teachers, Kosi Graduate and Saran Teachers.
A decision on the candidates and the party’s participation is expected after the executive committee meeting.
Panchayat Elections Another Priority
Jan Suraaj is also preparing for the Panchayat elections scheduled for next year. Following the Bankipur victory, Kishor had said the party’s next objective was to have a Jan Suraaj-backed candidate elected as Zila Parishad president in every district.
The party is therefore focusing on building its organisation at the Panchayat level and identifying potential local leaders.
Kishor’s proposed September tour is expected to form part of these preparations, with the party seeking to strengthen its presence in villages and develop a network of local workers.
Bankipur Victory Gives Party A Boost
Jan Suraaj recently defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Sinha by more than 19,000 votes in the Bankipur Assembly by-election, securing its first MLA.
The result marked a significant electoral breakthrough for the relatively new political organisation, with Bankipur having traditionally been a strong constituency for the BJP.
The upcoming Legislative Council and Panchayat elections will now provide Jan Suraaj with an opportunity to test whether its Bankipur success can be converted into a wider organisational presence across Bihar.
