Patna: The Janata Dal (United) is moving swiftly to finalize its list of candidates for the first phase of the upcoming elections, following a high-stakes, closed-door meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar at his official residence in Patna on Thursday.
The central drama emerging from the discussions is the potential for a significant shakeup: party sources indicate that several sitting MLAs may be denied tickets as the JD (U) seeks to optimize its winnability.
The Chief Minister held extensive consultations with the party’s top brass, including acting national president Sanjay Jha, Union Minister Lallan Singh, Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, and state president Umesh Kushwaha. Following the meeting, leaders were observed discreetly departing through the back entrance, underscoring the sensitivity of the decisions being made.
Focus on Lost Seats
According to party insiders, intense focus was placed on seats the JD (U) lost in the previous election cycle. The leadership is reportedly weighing whether to field new faces in these weak constituencies or rely on the experience of old candidates. Chief Minister Kumar personally sought feedback from all senior leaders present, marking the beginning of the end-stage process for the Phase One roster.
The JD (U) meeting precedes an anticipated broader session with leaders of the NDA constituent parties later this evening. The finalization process is running concurrently with strategy meetings being held by coalition partners, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) President Chirag Paswan, as the alliance races to present a unified list of candidates.
