Patna: As the Bihar assembly elections approach, speculation is mounting over fresh faces and unexpected candidates. Among the most talked-about names is Chanda Devi, the wife of Bhojpuri film star Khesari Lal Yadav, who is reportedly in line for a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) ticket from the Chhapra constituency.
While the party has yet to make an official announcement, political circles in Bihar are abuzz with the prospect. Chhapra, currently held by BJP’s CN Gupta, has been a stronghold for the party after back-to-back wins in 2015 and 2020. If Chanda Devi is fielded, analysts say, the contest could become one of the state’s most high-profile battles.
Khesari Lal Yadav, one of Bhojpuri cinema’s biggest names, is expected to throw his full weight behind his wife’s campaign, raising the stakes for the RJD. Her candidacy, observers believe, would merge electoral strategy with celebrity influence, energising the RJD base while challenging BJP dominance in the region.
The development also underscores the growing role of Bhojpuri stars in Bihar politics. The BJP has in recent years sought to build ties with film personalities to widen its reach, while the RJD’s potential move signals a calculated attempt to harness the cultural appeal of Bhojpuri cinema.
Whether Chanda Devi secures the ticket remains to be seen, but her possible entry into the race has already heightened anticipation. For many in Chhapra, the prospect of a star-powered campaign adds a new layer of drama to what is shaping up to be a tightly contested election.
