Patna: Students of Patna Women’s College, supported by local residents, caught and handed over to police a man accused of routinely harassing them on their way to class.
The incident took place early on Thursday in Nageshwar Colony, Patna, where students said the man had for days been hiding near a telephone box on Justice Narayan Path, making lewd remarks and obscene gestures as they passed.
After initially ignoring him, students said they decided to act when the behaviour became a daily occurrence. Around 6am, they alerted a guard from a nearby apartment block, who, along with local residents, helped confront the man. Witnesses said he was photographed, beaten, and then handed over to police via the Dial 112 emergency service.
Police later identified the man as Mulayam Singh Yadav, reportedly from Uttar Pradesh. He was taken to Kotwali police station after a crowd gathered at the scene. His mother, who arrived shortly after the incident, attempted to intervene but officers removed him from the area.
Students told reporters that they had been “terrified” by the persistent harassment. Local residents demanded strict action, saying that tougher measures were needed to deter such behaviour.
