Patna: Union minister Jitan Ram Manjhi has welcomed the government’s decision to overhaul the goods and services tax (GST) structure, calling it a “historic step” that will ease the financial burden on households.
The announcement followed the 56th meeting of the GST Council, where members approved the abolition of the 12% and 28% tax slabs. Manjhi said the move would make essential items such as food, clothing and housing more affordable, and improve household budgets, particularly for women.
“This decision by the central government will provide relief to the common man of the country,” Manjhi said in a statement, expressing gratitude to the prime minister, Narendra Modi, and congratulating finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Bihar’s deputy chief minister, Samrat Choudhary, who chaired the committee on rate rationalisation.
He added that the unanimous adoption of Choudhary’s report was a “meaningful indication” of Bihar’s role in shaping India’s economic growth.
Manjhi also highlighted provisions aimed at reducing the cost of health and life insurance, calling the move to lower GST on insurance products “a historic step”.
The minister framed the reform as part of Modi’s long-term vision of a “developed India” by 2047, saying it would help simplify the tax regime, improve transparency and accelerate economic growth.
“This initiative will give the country a simple, transparent and public-interest tax system,” Manjhi said, describing it as a landmark decision of the NDA government.
