Gaya: Jyoti Devi, a candidate of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) and sister-in-law of Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, was injured during campaigning in Gaya’s Barachatti constituency on Saturday.
According to reports, Devi was travelling in an open jeep through the Sulebatta area when stones were reportedly thrown by members of the crowd. One of the stones struck her, causing injuries. She is currently receiving treatment at a local health centre and is said to be out of danger. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
The attack comes ahead of the second phase of voting in Barachatti. HAM (Secular), which is allied with the National Democratic Alliance, has fielded several family members as candidates in this election. Alongside Devi, Jitan Ram Manjhi’s daughter-in-law Deepa Kumari is contesting from Imamganj, and his son-in-law Prafull Kumar Manjhi is standing from Sikandra in Jamui district.
In addition, two tickets were awarded to the family of Anil Kumar, a member of the Bhumihar community. Anil Kumar, the party’s state president, is contesting from Tikari in Gaya, while his nephew Romit Kumar is running from the Atari seat in the same district.
