Samastipur: Carrying forward the legacy of Bihar’s socialist icon Jananayak Karpoori Thakur, his granddaughter Jagriti Thakur has officially entered the political arena. The Jan Suraaj Party, led by Prashant Kishor, has nominated her as its candidate from the Morwa Assembly constituency in Samastipur district for the upcoming Bihar elections.
Speaking after receiving the party ticket, Jagriti said she has joined politics with the resolve to fulfill her grandfather’s unfulfilled dreams. “My grandfather always spoke out for the marginalized and the underprivileged,” she said. “After his death, politics continued in his name, but no one truly followed the path he showed. I want to change that.”
‘I Want To Rebuild His Ideology’
Jagriti, who is an MBBS doctor by profession, emphasized that she wants to re-establish Karpoori Thakur’s ideology of equality and justice, pledging to work for all sections of society. She said unemployment remains a major issue in Bihar, especially in rural constituencies like Morwa, which was once part of the Tajpur Assembly seat where Karpoori Thakur himself contested.
“The people here have always respected my grandfather’s vision,” Jagriti said. “But after his passing, the region developed only in his name, not in his spirit. I want to bring real change by working with every community.”
A Legacy of Political Service
Jagriti Thakur is the daughter of Dr. Virendra Thakur, the eldest son of Karpoori Thakur. Her uncle, Ramnath Thakur, currently serves as the Union Minister of State for Agriculture in the central government.
Jagriti, who resides mainly in Patna, had joined Jan Suraaj around three months ago during a visit to Smriti Bhawan, her grandfather’s ancestral home. There, she announced her intention to join public life under the banner of Jan Suraaj, inspired by the late leader’s values of simplicity, equality, and public service.
