Khagaria: The Ganga and Budhi Gandak rivers are swelling dangerously in Khagaria, Bihar, threatening homes and farmland. At Khara Dhar water gate, the Ganga has risen 52cm above the danger mark, while the Budhi Gandak stands 32cm above the safe level near NH-31 Bridge at Aghori Sthan. After a brief period of receding water, the rivers have surged back, spreading floodwaters across low-lying villages and forcing residents to evacuate or move to safer areas.
In Varuna (Baurna) Panchayat of Gogri block, three wards — numbers four, eight and 10 — are now under water. Local Mukhiya Md Nasir Iqbal confirmed that the village is surrounded by floodwaters. Ward member Zubair said about 25 to 30 houses are completely cut off and residents are demanding boats to move safely. Another local, Shahanshah, warned that if the water level continues to rise, many more homes could be submerged by Saturday, leaving families at risk.
Banni Panchayat has also been affected, with floodwater entering wards five, six, and 17 to 23. Sharda Nagar, part of Gogri Municipal Council, is under water as well, worsening the difficulties for residents. People fear damage to homes, crops and livestock, and many are now living under constant uncertainty. Villagers are appealing for emergency support and relief supplies to cope with the sudden rise of water.
Officials from the Water Resources Department say the flood situation may worsen in the coming days. Naval Kishore Bharti, chief engineer of Flood Control and Water Drainage, Samastipur, explained that the Ganga continues to rise with no sign of decrease. He noted that rainwater from Uttarakhand and tributaries like the Punpun, Muhane, and Panchanane rivers are all flowing into the Ganga, adding to the swelling waters. Authorities are keeping a close watch, urging residents in flood-prone areas to stay alert and prepare for possible evacuation.
