Khagaria: A man accused of assaulting police personnel and snatching a Sub-Inspector’s service pistol and mobile phone was injured in a police encounter in Bihar’s Khagaria district late Tuesday night. The accused, identified as Akhilesh Kumar, sustained a gunshot injury to his leg during what police described as retaliatory firing after he allegedly attempted to escape custody and attack the police team.
He was admitted to Sadar Hospital and is undergoing treatment under police custody. Two other accused, who were allegedly involved in the incident, escaped and are being traced.
Vehicle Check Led to Clash
According to police, the incident began during a routine vehicle-checking drive in the Beldaur police station area near Kurban village. Officers attempted to stop three men travelling on a motorcycle after finding their movement suspicious.
Police alleged that the three men confronted the team, assaulted a Sub-Inspector, snatched his service pistol and mobile phone, and fled the spot. The incident prompted an immediate search operation.

Joint Police Team Launched Search Operation
Following the incident, Khagaria Superintendent of Police Bhanu Pratap Singh directed the formation of a joint team comprising the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), District Intelligence Unit (DIU), and Beldaur police to trace and arrest the accused.
Police said one of the accused, Akhilesh Kumar, was apprehended during the operation. However, while he was being taken into custody near Ranki Basa on the Sakrohar–Kurban Pradhan Mantri Path, he allegedly attempted to flee and attacked the police team.
According to officials, the police warned him to surrender. When he allegedly continued the attack, officers opened fire in self-defence, injuring him in the leg. Police also recovered two spent shell casings from the spot.
Speaking about the incident, Khagaria Superintendent of Police Bhanu Pratap Singh said swift action was taken against those involved in snatching a police officer’s service weapon.
“Swift action has been taken against the criminals who snatched a service weapon from a Sub-Inspector. The accused, Akhilesh Kumar, sustained injuries from a shot fired in self-defence while attempting to escape custody and attack the police team. He is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. Two spent shell casings have been recovered from the scene. Intensive raids are underway at suspected hideouts to recover the snatched service pistol and arrest his two accomplices who fled the spot. The police are investigating the criminal network of the entire gang,” Bhanu Pratap Singh, Superintendent of Police, Khagaria, said.
The SP also stated in his on-camera byte that the police have recovered the snatched service pistol and the mobile phone belonging to the police official.
Security Tightened, Raids Continue
Following the encounter, the Superintendent of Police visited the spot to review the operation and directed officials to strengthen security arrangements in the area.
The injured accused has been identified as Akhilesh Kumar, son of Lalo Sada, a resident of Ward No. 4 in Kurban village.
Police said raids are continuing to arrest the remaining two accused and investigate the wider criminal network allegedly linked to the incident. Authorities are also examining the circumstances surrounding the attack on the police team.
