Patna: The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Koderma detained a youth on Tuesday after a large sum of cash was found in his bag during a routine security inspection. The man was preparing to travel from Koderma to Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, when the GRP, acting on a tip-off, increased surveillance across the railway station premises. Officers stopped him on platform number 3 at around 4.30pm and searched his bag after becoming suspicious of his behaviour.
The detained youth was identified as Amit Kumar, son of Sunil Baranwal, a resident of Sikandra village in Jamui district of Bihar. During initial questioning, he claimed that the bag held Rs 25 lakh. However, when officers counted the bundles of notes, the total amount came to Rs 40 lakh. Amit stated that he was involved in the business of gold and silver and was travelling to Kolkata to purchase jewellery. GRP officials said that while the explanation was noted, no supporting documents or receipts were provided.
The GRP gave Amit one full day to produce documents proving the source and purpose of the money. Even after the deadline passed, he could not furnish any evidence. Officers said that the contradictions in his statements, along with the absence of paperwork, made the circumstances highly suspicious and pointed to the possibility of unaccounted or illegally transported money.
GRP Station House Officer Upendra Kumar said that instructions had been received from senior authorities to hand over the case to the Income Tax Department for further action. The GRP has formally requested the Sub-Divisional Officer to appoint a magistrate so that the seized money can be transferred to tax officials legally and safely. The bag of cash will remain sealed until the handover is completed, and a detailed investigation is expected to determine whether the money was linked to tax evasion, organised trade or any unlawful activities.
