Patna: In the quiet hours of the night, vehicles rolled up to 10, Circular Road in Patna as the family of former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad began vacating the government bungalow that has served as their home for nearly two decades.
Household belongings were moved out under cover of darkness, with sources saying the items would first be shifted to a cowshed on Gola Road before being relocated elsewhere. The move follows a notice issued around a month ago by the Bihar Building Construction Department, asking the family to vacate the premises.
According to the official order, the property—listed as residence number 39, Harding Road, under the state’s central pool—has been reallocated for use by the Bihar Legislative Council, bringing an administrative end to the family’s long occupation of the bungalow.
The eviction has also reignited political and personal tensions. Reacting to the development, Lalu Prasad’s elder son, Tej Pratap Yadav, took to social media to criticise Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, suggesting that the decision symbolised a final rupture in the once-strong alliance between Nitish Kumar and his father.
“For 28 years, this house was not just a residence but an emotional centre for RJD workers and the people of Bihar,” Tej Pratap wrote, adding that the bond between the two political families had been irreversibly broken.
The move follows a series of departures from the bungalow. On November 15, Lalu Prasad’s daughter Rohini Acharya left the house visibly emotional, followed by three of her sisters in the days that followed. Tej Pratap himself no longer resides there, having earlier been expelled from both the party and the family, and now lives in a separate government accommodation.
At present, the bungalow was officially occupied by Lalu Prasad, his wife and former chief minister Rabri Devi, and their younger son, Tejashwi Yadav, along with his family. None of them, however, are currently in Patna. Tejashwi Yadav is reported to be on a private holiday in Europe with his wife and children, while Lalu Prasad recently underwent eye surgery in Delhi and is staying with his eldest daughter, Misa Bharti, along with Rabri Devi.
The vacating of 10 Circular Road closes a chapter in Bihar’s political history, ending the association of an address that for years functioned as both a family home and a nerve centre of Rashtriya Janata Dal politics.
