Bodh Gaya : Special prayers were held at the Mahabodhi Temple on Saturday morning to mark the International Day for Monuments and Sites, drawing devotees and officials to the sanctum sanctorum of the UNESCO-listed site.
The ceremony took place before the statue of Lord Buddha, where temple authorities and visitors gathered in a show of reverence at one of Buddhism’s holiest locations in Bodh Gaya.
Mahashweta Maharathi, member secretary of the Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC), said the temple — recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2002 — stands at the spot where Gautama Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment more than 2,500 years ago under the Bodhi tree.

“This hallowed site continues to inspire millions across the world, transcending the -boundaries of nation, culture and faith,” she said.
Maharathi highlighted the temple’s architectural importance, noting that its towering pyramidal spire and intricately carved façade reflect the evolution of early Indian brick architecture. She added that it remains a living centre of devotion, meditation and pilgrimage, attracting seekers in pursuit of peace and self-realisation.
She also said the occasion underscored the shared responsibility to preserve global heritage. “The Mahabodhi Temple is not merely a monument of the past, but a living beacon of compassion, harmony and awakening for present and future generations,” she said.
