Patna: The world of Mirzapur is moving from streaming screens to cinemas, with Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyendu Sharma arriving in Patna on Saturday to promote the upcoming film.

The film, which promises to bring the show’s intense power struggles and battle for the throne to the big screen, is scheduled for theatrical release on September 4.

Pankaj Tripathi revisits his theatre roots

For Tripathi, the Patna visit was also a trip down memory lane. The actor, who hails from Bihar, recalled his early theatre years and a visit to Khagaul and Danapur.

“Today, I had the opportunity to visit Khagaul. I arrived at Danapur station after 30 years,” Tripathi said.

He recalled performing at an auditorium where he began his theatre journey in 1996, cycling daily from Kankarbagh to perform in plays.

“Today, I revisited those old streets; whenever I come to this city, I am transported back to old memories,” he said.

Tripathi also said he would like to make a film in Bhojpuri and is currently looking for a suitable script.

Tripathi addresses Mirzapur’s profanity

Discussing the profanity associated with Mirzapur, Tripathi said expletives can sometimes be used when people lack other words to express their emotions.

He said the use of such language depends on the nature of a character and the demands of the story.

“I am an artist; whatever is given to me, I will bring to the screen with emotional depth,” Tripathi said.

He also pointed out the difference between the show’s original OTT release and the upcoming theatrical film. While the web series was released on a platform without the same theatrical censorship restrictions, the film has been certified ‘A’ by the censor board.

Ali Fazal on bringing Mirzapur to cinemas

Fazal said the decision to bring Mirzapur to the big screen was driven by the strong connection audiences have developed with the series and its characters.

Given the audience’s love for the show, the team decided to take the story to cinemas, he said.

Fazal noted that characters such as Guddu, Munna and Bablu had become household names, with audiences developing a deep connection with them.

Reflecting on his visit to Bihar, Fazal said he felt he should have come much earlier.

“It took me a long time to get here; I should have visited Bihar much sooner,” he said, adding that he had family connections to the state, with his mother-in-law from Bihar and his grandfather having been posted there.

Divyendu Sharma hints at new battle for the throne

Sharma said Mirzapur had given the cast a distinct identity and played a significant role in the evolution of India’s OTT space.

“When it was first released, it sparked a revolution in the OTT space. The writing is beautifully crafted,” he said.

Sharma added that he would remain a fan of Mirzapur regardless of whether he continued to be part of the franchise.

He also revealed that the film introduces new contenders for the throne and claimed that the characters are alive in the movie and that events are progressing smoothly.

Speaking about his character’s return after his death in the web series, Sharma said the story made his comeback inevitable.

On the film’s commercial prospects, Sharma predicted that Mirzapur would cross Rs 400 crore at the box office.

  • Bihar’s Women Voters: The Political Force Parties Can’t Ignore

Noted economist and Prime Minister’s adviser Shamika Ravi said women in Bihar have emerged as a powerful political constituency, with parties increasingly beholden to their support.
Speaking at a recent event in Patna on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Ravi said, between 1990 and 2005, Bihar’s GDP growth rate remained stagnant. In 2005, no political party secured a majority, leading to six months of President’s Rule, during which no new policy was introduced. When elections were held again in October 2005, the results changed dramatically.
Ravi said the data showed that women voters in Bihar acted as agents of change — one of the reasons, she argued, why the state’s political class is now beholden to women voters.
