Patna: Bihar set for new railway link as Centre sends Mithila–Kosi line proposal to NITI AayogPatna: Bihar’s rail network could soon see a major expansion, with the Union railway ministry proposing a new 95km railway line to connect Laheriasarai in Darbhanga district with Saharsa, improving transport links across the Mithila and Kosi regions. The proposal has been forwarded to NITI Aayog for approval, marking a significant step towards strengthening connectivity in north Bihar.
Darbhanga MP Gopal Ji Thakur said the planned corridor would offer a faster and more reliable route for passengers travelling towards West Bengal and the northeastern states. The region, often affected by floods and difficult terrain, has historically faced logistical challenges, making improved rail infrastructure a long-standing demand of residents.
According to preliminary estimates, the project will cost around Rs 2,376 crore. Plans include the construction of a major bridge over the Kosi river, along with 10 crossing stations, two halts, 72 underpasses, 14 major bridges and 41 minor bridges. Officials say the supporting infrastructure is aimed at ensuring safe, uninterrupted operations in one of Bihar’s most riverine belts.
The new line is expected to benefit several assembly constituencies, including Darbhanga, Bahadurpur, Hayaghat, Benipur, Alinagar, Gora Bauram and Kusheshwar Asthan. The proposed alignment will run through Laheriasarai, Dekuli, Ughra, Khaira, Bithauli, Shankar Rohar, Havidih, Sajanpur, Kanhauli, Jagdishpur, Ghanshyampur, Kiratpur, Jamalpur, Mahishi, Bangaon and Saharsa Junction.
If cleared, the corridor would create an alternative route for eastbound and northeast-bound travel while supporting local commerce, education and healthcare access. For residents of the Mithila–Kosi belt, the line promises not just shorter journeys, but improved economic and social mobility across the region.
