Muzaffarpur: A busy road in Muzaffarpur district has been completely closed to vehicles as part of ongoing work under the Smart City project. The road connecting Mehendi Hasan Chowk to Kila Chowk (Brahmpura) was shut on December 12 and will remain closed until January 15. During this period, no vehicles are allowed to use this route. The closure has been announced to allow uninterrupted construction work on important underground infrastructure in the city.
According to the municipal corporation, the road has been blocked to speed up the construction of the underground sewerage system, the SBR-STP connection and a new storm water drainage network. These works are being carried out to solve long-standing problems such as waterlogging during the rainy season and poor sanitation in many parts of the city. Officials said that keeping the road open would slow down the work and lead to repeated digging, which is why a complete closure was considered necessary.
Municipal commissioner Vikram Virkar has appealed to city residents to cooperate during the construction period. He said that while the work may cause temporary inconvenience, it will bring long-term benefits in the form of cleaner surroundings, better drainage and improved urban services. He added that the Smart City project aims to make Muzaffarpur more organised, cleaner and more liveable, and the underground sewerage work is a key part of this plan.
To reduce problems for commuters, the municipal corporation has announced alternative routes. People travelling towards Karbala Chowk can use Marine Drive Road instead of going through Mehendi Hasan Chowk. Vehicles heading in the other direction have been advised to take the Sangam Chowk to Lakshmi Chowk route. The civic body has also instructed the traffic police, electricity department, BSNL and other concerned agencies to coordinate closely so that traffic moves smoothly and essential services are not disrupted while the road remains closed.
