Mokama/Patna : Rail connectivity between north and south Bihar is expected to receive a major boost, with train operations on the new rail bridge over the Ganga at Mokama likely to begin on October 5, 2026.
Built parallel to the existing Rajendra Setu, the new bridge has been designed to accommodate both passenger and freight trains. Its commissioning is expected to increase capacity on this important railway corridor and improve the management of train movements.
The proposed start of operations remains subject to the completion of safety inspections and the necessary clearance from railway authorities.
Railway Safety Commissioner Inspects New Bridge
On October 3, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Eastern Circle, Kolkata, Guru Prakash, inspected the new bridge and associated railway infrastructure along with other officials.
The two-day inspection, scheduled for October 3 and 4, covers the bridge structure, tracks, signalling systems, electrification and other technical arrangements.
During the first day, the Commissioner inspected the eastern line of the main bridge between Rajendra Setu and Hathidah Upper using a motor trolley. The inspection also covered the track and railway infrastructure extending towards Viaduct-1 near the Howrah end between Hathidah Upper and Rampur Dumra.
Regular train operations can begin once the required safety checks are completed and the infrastructure receives the necessary approval.
Signalling Upgrades Completed on the Mokama–Rampur Dumra Section
Alongside the new bridge, several technical upgrades have been completed on the approximately 13-km Mokama–Rampur Dumra railway section.
The work includes the commissioning of:
- Three new electronic interlocking systems.
- Interlocking arrangements at two level-crossing gates.
- An automatic signalling system.
These upgrades are intended to improve the safety, reliability and efficiency of train operations along the route.
How Automatic Signalling Will Help Train Operations
The introduction of automatic signalling is expected to help railway authorities regulate train movements more efficiently and make better use of available track capacity.
Electronic interlocking systems coordinate signals and track-related equipment to help ensure that train movements follow safe operating conditions. Interlocking at level-crossing gates also improves coordination between railway operations and road traffic.
Together, these measures are expected to strengthen operational safety and support smoother movement of passenger and freight trains.
Major Relief Expected for North and South Bihar
Mokama is an important railway corridor connecting parts of north and south Bihar. The existing bridge and associated railway infrastructure play a significant role in regional passenger and freight movement.
Once the new bridge becomes operational, it is expected to ease pressure on the existing railway infrastructure and provide additional capacity for train services.
The additional infrastructure could also help railway authorities manage train movements more effectively as traffic grows on the corridor.
Freight Movement Could Also Benefit
The new bridge is designed for both passenger and goods trains, making it important for freight transportation as well as daily commuters.
Additional rail capacity could support the movement of goods across the region and improve operational flexibility for railway services. The extent of these benefits will depend on how the new infrastructure is incorporated into the railway network and the services scheduled to use it.
Senior Railway Officials Attend Inspection
Several senior officials attended the inspection, including Rajiv Gupta, Chief Administrative Officer (Construction), South, and Vinod Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager of Danapur Division.
Officials from the railway construction organisation, IRCON and Danapur Division also participated in the inspection process.
October 5 Could Mark a Key Milestone for Mokama
The proposed commissioning of the new bridge could mark an important development for railway connectivity across the Ganga at Mokama.
While the project is expected to increase capacity and improve the movement of passenger and freight trains, the final start of operations will depend on the outcome of the safety inspection and the required approvals.
Passengers should follow official railway announcements for confirmation of the commissioning date and any changes to train services.
