Patna: The southwest monsoon made its official entry into Bihar on Tuesday, arriving through Purnia and Kishanganj. The seasonal rains have already brought showers to Bhagalpur, Aurangabad, Kishanganj, Katihar, and Banka.
The IMD has issued rainfall warnings across the state, predicting moderate to heavy rainfall in all 38 districts over the coming days. Ten districts are under an orange alert for heavy rain, while 28 districts are under a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning. A general warning for lightning has also been issued.
The department forecasts that this year’s monsoon will be normal, with rainfall expected to be around 11% above the seasonal average. Widespread monsoon activity across Bihar is likely to be in full swing by June 26.
Tragically, 14 people lost their lives due to lightning strikes on Monday in different parts of the state. An additional 12 people suffered burn injuries in lightning-related incidents.
The IMD has outlined the likely progression of rainfall across the state:
- June 18–19: Showers are expected in Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia and Supaul.
- June 20–21: Rain will extend to Madhepura, Katihar, Bhagalpur, Banka, Munger, Khagaria, Saharsa, Jamui, Madhubani, and Darbhanga.
- June 22–24: Patna, Nalanda, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, Shivhar, Lakhisarai, Sheikhpura, Begusarai, Samastipur, and Jehanabad will see rainfall.
- June 24–25: Rainfall will reach Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, East and West Champaran, Bhojpur, Arwal, Aurangabad, Rohtas, Kaimur, and Buxar.
Cloudy skies and rainfall will provide some respite from the heat, particularly in and around Patna, where light to moderate showers are forecast. The IMD continues to advise caution in areas under alert due to the risk of lightning and heavy downpours.
