Munger/Patna: The Munger–Mirzachowki greenfield four-lane highway project, designed to strengthen road connectivity between Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, is nearing completion, officials said.
The 124-km corridor, being developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), is expected to be ready for public use by June 30. The project is estimated to cost around Rs. 5,000 crore.
Final-stage construction under way
Officials said most of the construction work has been completed, with only limited finishing and connectivity-related work remaining at a few locations.
Partial construction activity is continuing near Teliya Talab in the Patam area, while the shifting of power transmission lines near Akbarnagar is also in its final stage.
Project director Manish Kumar said a technical issue near Rasalpur under Package-3 was being addressed and would be resolved soon.
“The target is to open the entire stretch to the public by June 30,” he said.
Highway divided into four packages
The highway, earlier known as NH-80 and now redesignated as NH-33, has been developed in four construction packages:
Package 1
Munger–Kharia–Pipra stretch
Length: 26 km
Cost: Rs. 981 crore
Package 2
Kharia to Bhagalpur bypass
Length: 29 km
Cost: Rs. 981 crore
Package 3
Bypass Chaudharidih–Rasalpur stretch
Length: 32 km
Cost: Rs. 1,012 crore
Package 4
Rasalpur–Mirzachowki stretch
Length: 36 km
Cost: Rs. 892 crore
Authorities said work on all four packages is largely complete, with only final finishing work under progress.
Expected benefits for eastern Bihar
The four-lane highway is expected to reduce travel time and improve road safety for both passenger and commercial vehicles travelling towards Jharkhand and West Bengal.
Residents of Khagaria, Begusarai, Kosi and Seemanchal regions are expected to benefit from smoother road access and reduced congestion.
Officials said vehicles travelling towards these districts would be able to use service lanes near Krishna Setu for easier movement, while traffic moving from Munger towards Mirzachowki would have uninterrupted access through flyovers.
Trade and transport likely to benefit
Authorities expect the project to support trade, transport and industrial activity in the region by improving inter-state connectivity.
The highway is also expected to contribute to economic development in eastern Bihar by enabling faster movement of goods and passengers.
