Patna: Bihar is set to receive a major boost to its road infrastructure after the Union Cabinet approved the construction of a four-lane highway connecting Muzaffarpur to Sonbarsa via Sitamarhi. The project has an estimated cost of ₹3,591 crore.
The proposed highway is expected to strengthen road connectivity across North Bihar, improve travel between Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi and Sonbarsa, and make the movement of passengers and freight more efficient.
Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi travel set to become easier
The new four-lane road is expected to provide an improved alternative to the existing route and help ease traffic pressure. Better road infrastructure could also reduce travel time for commuters travelling between Muzaffarpur and Sitamarhi and onward to Sonbarsa.
The project is particularly significant for residents and businesses in Sitamarhi and surrounding areas, where improved connectivity could facilitate easier access to markets and other parts of the state.
Boost expected for trade and local economy
The highway is also expected to support commercial activity in the region. Improved road connectivity can make the transportation of agricultural produce, goods and other commodities faster and more efficient.
Traders, transport operators and residents travelling between North Bihar districts are likely to benefit from the upgraded road network. The project could also strengthen connectivity for vehicles travelling towards the India-Nepal border through the Sonbarsa region.
Four railway projects also approved
Alongside the Bihar highway project, the Union Cabinet has also approved four multi-tracking railway projects in different parts of the country.
The railway projects involve an estimated investment of around ₹9,450 crore and will cover parts of West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Together, they are expected to add around 410 km to railway network capacity and benefit eight districts.
For Bihar, the approval of the Muzaffarpur-Sitamarhi-Sonbarsa highway is expected to strengthen the state’s road infrastructure and improve connectivity across an important corridor of North Bihar.
