Patna: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed as the Governor of Nagaland, the President announced on March 5. A prominent figure in Bihar politics for more than three decades, Yadav has served as a seven-time member of the legislative assembly, a state minister and the Speaker of the assembly.
Yadav’s appointment follows a long political career rooted in Bihar. He has held several key roles in both the BJP organisation and successive state governments, gaining recognition as a senior leader from the state capital Patna.
According to his 2025 election affidavit, Yadav declared total assets worth Rs13.7 crore, including movable assets valued at Rs1.46 crore and immovable assets worth Rs12.23 crore. The affidavit states that he has no liabilities.
Yadav began his political career in municipal politics, first serving as a councillor in the Patna Municipal Corporation before becoming the city’s deputy mayor. He later rose within the BJP ranks, serving as president of the party’s youth wing in the state. Since 1995, he has won seven consecutive assembly elections—initially from the Patna East constituency and later from Patna City after constituency delimitation—setting a record for continuous electoral victories.
During the governments led by Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, Yadav emerged as one of the BJP’s prominent voices in the state. He also served as the party’s Bihar president for nearly five years, working alongside senior leaders such as Sushil Kumar Modi, Ashwini Choubey and Prem Kumar.
Much of the BJP leadership in Bihar during that period developed under the guidance of the veteran party figure Kailashpati Mishra, with Yadav gaining a reputation as an effective organiser.
Yadav also served several terms as a minister in governments led by Nitish Kumar. He held portfolios including road construction—where he had one of his longest tenures—as well as health, family welfare and tourism.
After the alliance between the BJP and the Janata Dal (United) collapsed in 2013, Yadav was appointed leader of the opposition in the Bihar legislative assembly, succeeding a period when the role had been held for many years by Sushil Kumar Modi.
Born on August 26, 1953 Yadav completed his matriculation in 1970 and left his graduation studies during the student-led movement inspired by Jayaprakash Narayan. He has been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh since 1969 and is regarded within the BJP as one of its prominent leaders from the Yadav community.
Following the announcement, BJP leaders in Bihar congratulated Yadav on his appointment. Party figures said his long administrative and legislative experience would help guide the northeastern state in his new constitutional role.
