Rajgir: The 18th meeting of the National Power Committee (NPC) was held in Rajgir, Bihar, on September 18, with officials discussing measures to ensure the security, reliability and stability of the country’s integrated power grid.
The one-day meeting also focused on improving coordination and adopting uniform working practices among Regional Power Committees (RPCs), power companies and Load Dispatch Centres.
The meeting was inaugurated by Central Electricity Authority (CEA) Chairman Ghanshyam Prasad. Eastern Regional Power Committee Chairman and Bihar Energy Department Secretary-cum-Chairman-cum-Managing Director of BSPHCL, Ajay Yadav, welcomed representatives attending the meeting.
Focus On Rising Power Demand
Officials discussed national and regional challenges, including the monitoring and analysis of grid disturbances and the implementation of corrective measures.
With power demand increasing and the share of renewable energy expanding, participants stressed the importance of modern technology, improved forecasting and closer coordination across the power system.
NPC Chairman Ghanshyam Prasad said coordinated efforts among the Centre, states, regional committees, generation and transmission companies, DISCOMs and Load Dispatch Centres were necessary to maintain safe and reliable power supply.
Power Capacity And Emergency Restoration
The meeting also reviewed the optimal use of additional power generation capacity. Initiatives including the PUShP portal were discussed in the context of balancing demand and availability and ensuring that available capacity is used effectively where required.
Ajay Yadav said the Committee’s decisions and reviews would support the safe and smooth operation of the national power grid. He also highlighted the need to strengthen the Emergency Restoration System (ERS), which he said had helped restore power supply quickly in Bihar during recent disasters.
The gathering also took note of developments in Bihar’s power sector and initiatives related to green energy.
Representatives From Power Sector Institutions
Participants included officials from the CEA, Eastern Regional Power Committee, North Eastern Regional Power Committee, Northern Regional Power Committee, Western Regional Power Committee and Southern Regional Power Committee.
Senior representatives from Grid-India, Central Transmission Utility of India Limited (CTUIL), Power Grid and other power generation, transmission and load-dispatch institutions also attended.
The participating institutions agreed to work towards timely implementation of the recommendations and decisions taken by the Committee.
About The National Power Committee
The National Power Committee was constituted by the Ministry of Power on March 25, 2013, to develop a uniform approach to issues concerning the reliability and security of the national power grid.
Its secretariat functions under the National Power Committee Division of the CEA. The Committee is chaired by the CEA chairman and addresses issues with inter-regional implications and matters requiring coordination among multiple Regional Power Committees.
