Patna: In a bid to improve soil health and reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers, Bihar is set to implement natural farming across all districts. The initiative will span 17,500 hectares of land over the next two years, organized into 350 clusters, each comprising 125 farmers.
The state’s Agriculture Department has finalized an annual action plan for the program, which was submitted to the Central Government on January 15. Based on this proposal, Bihar is expected to receive Rs 53 crore to support the initiative. However, delays in funding have hindered the implementation of natural farming practices so far.
Under the program, farmers will be trained in the preparation of organic inputs such as Beej Amrit, Amritpani, and Jeevamrit. Guidance will also be provided on crop selection for each season and the broader benefits of natural farming practices.
Promotion of Traditional Seeds
A key focus of the initiative will be the promotion of traditional seeds. The Agriculture Department and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) are collaborating to identify farmers who have preserved traditional seed varieties. These seeds will be central to advancing natural farming practices in the state.
Scientists from KVK will provide technical guidance to the selected farmers, ensuring effective implementation of organic farming techniques. Dilip Varnwal, Assistant Director of Bihar Organic Mission, stated that the clusters are being formed to ensure efficient management and uniform implementation of natural farming practices.
With this initiative, Bihar aims to move toward a more sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural model while reducing the use of harmful chemical fertilizers.
