Patna: Bihar has intensified flood preparedness along its border with Nepal following severe flooding in the neighbouring country, with Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary conducting an aerial survey of affected and vulnerable areas on Thursday.

Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary accompanied the chief minister during the survey. Samrat Chaudhary said he assessed the flood situation in the border areas of Bagaha, Valmikinagar, Bettiah and Motihari amid concerns over the possible impact of the flooding in Nepal.

NDRF and SDRF teams have been placed on high alert, while precautionary measures are being implemented across eight districts.

CM inspects Gandak and Kosi

During the aerial survey, the chief minister primarily inspected the Gandak and Kosi rivers and reviewed the situation in areas bordering Nepal.

In a post on X, Chaudhary said he reviewed administrative preparations for the potential impact of rising water levels, precautionary and safety measures, and arrangements for relief and rescue operations.

He directed officials to take necessary measures with utmost promptness and remain vigilant around the clock.

The chief minister said ensuring the safety of citizens and providing all possible assistance in flood-affected areas remained the government’s top priority.

Situation currently under control

Despite the flood threat following the situation in Nepal, the state government has said there is currently no need for panic.

According to Chaudhary, the situation in Bihar is under control and conditions are gradually returning to normal. He said the discharge of around one lakh cusecs of water has not resulted in an alarming situation so far.

However, officials remain cautious because river water levels can fluctuate suddenly during the monsoon. Continuous monitoring of rivers, weather conditions and vulnerable areas will therefore continue in the coming days.

Railways step up flood preparedness

The Railways has also strengthened its preparedness in anticipation of possible flooding.

The Samastipur Railway Division has intensified monitoring of railway tracks, bridges and culverts, particularly in areas that could be affected by rising water levels.

Railway authorities have said train operations on any section will be immediately stopped or regulated if rising floodwaters threaten the safety of tracks or bridges.

Divisional Railway Manager Jyoti Prakash Mishra has directed officials to maintain close coordination with the East Champaran and West Champaran district administrations and continuously monitor the flood situation.

Railway personnel have also been instructed to remain on alert in their respective jurisdictions.

Vigilance to continue along Nepal border

With the flood situation in Nepal continuing to influence concerns in Bihar, the government is maintaining special surveillance in districts along the international border.

Officials have been instructed to closely monitor developments and respond quickly if river levels rise.

For now, the administration maintains that the situation is under control, while emphasising that constant vigilance remains necessary during the ongoing monsoon season.
