East Champaran: A block administration in Bihar has issued an awareness notice informing Nepali women married to Indian citizens about the process for applying for Indian citizenship under provisions of the Citizenship Act, 1955.
The notice, displayed within the block office premises, outlines the legal framework, eligibility conditions, required documents and procedural steps for applicants seeking citizenship through marriage.
Legal Provision For Citizenship
According to the administration, Nepali women married to Indian citizens may apply for citizenship under Section 5(1)(c) of the Citizenship Act, 1955 and Rule 5 of the Citizenship Rules, 2009.
Officials said applicants must submit their request in Form-3, the prescribed application format under the rules. Authorities added that applications will be processed only if all stated conditions are fulfilled and complete documents are submitted.
Residency And Declaration Requirements
The administration said applicants must submit an affidavit declaring that they have renounced their Nepali citizenship.
A separate affidavit confirming ordinary residence in India for at least seven years is also mandatory. Officials said verification of the seven-year residency period forms a key part of the scrutiny process.
Documents Required
Authorities said applicants must attach several supporting documents with the application. These include:
• A valid passport issued by the Government of Nepal
• A valid residential permit
• Proof of the husband’s Indian citizenship
• A marriage certificate issued by a registered marriage registrar
Officials warned that incomplete documentation or incorrect information may delay or affect the application process.
Administration’s Statement
Uday Kumar, Block Development Officer, said the banner had been installed to raise awareness among Nepali women who are married and residing in India regarding the citizenship application process.
He said the procedure would become easier for applicants if government guidelines are followed carefully and all required documents are submitted in the prescribed manner.
