Muzaffarpur: In a bid to deliver smoother and safer mobility, the district administration has moved forward with a series of key infrastructure proposals aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the city. District Magistrate Subrata Kumar Sen has urged the Road Construction Department to prioritise widening busy routes, upgrading existing stretches, and accelerating ongoing bridge projects.
With the city’s population and number of vehicles rising steadily, the administration says an improved and modern traffic system is urgently needed.
Akharaghat Bridge Project to Get Supporting Road Upgrades
The high-level bridge being constructed near the existing Akharaghat Bridge over the Budhi Gandak River is currently in progress under the Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation Limited. During a district-level review, officials said that approach road widening — 200 metres on each side — is included in the project plan.
However, the District Magistrate emphasised that to fully decongest the city, upgraded road connectivity on both sides is essential. He has requested that this component be taken up on priority to ensure smoother movement once the new bridge opens.
Key Route Widening from Saraiyaganj Tower Chowk to Zero Mile
One of Muzaffarpur’s busiest stretches — from Saraiyaganj Tower Chowk to Zero Mile Roundabout via the Akharaghat Bridge — faces daily traffic snarls, often affecting ambulances and emergency services.
Sen has recommended immediate widening and strengthening of this entire route, noting that it is crucial to overall traffic management in the city. Better road space and infrastructure would significantly ease movement for the public, he added in his proposal to the department.
Fencing on Akharaghat Bridge to Prevent Water Pollution
During review inspections, officials observed that religious items and other waste were frequently dumped from the Akharaghat Bridge into the Budhi Gandak River, causing pollution risks.
Acting on this, the District Magistrate has directed that protective fencing be installed on both sides of the bridge to safeguard the river’s biodiversity, in accordance with National Mission for Clean Ganga and NGT guidelines. The proposal has been sent to Road Division-1 for execution.
New Rail Overbridge Proposed Near Narayanpur-Anant Station
The administration has also submitted documents for administrative approval to build a new rail overbridge (ROB) between Muzaffarpur and Narayanpur-Anant Railway Station. The planned overpass will help remove bottlenecks on a vital route connecting the eastern and southern parts of the city.
Officials say the ROB will improve urban mobility and support future expansion.
“Priority to Public Convenience,” Says DM
Highlighting the urgent need to address growing transport pressures, Sen said work is ongoing to expand roads, construct new bridges, and improve existing infrastructure.
He expressed confidence that once the proposed projects are cleared, traffic congestion will reduce significantly and citizens will benefit from a safe and efficient transportation network.
