Patna: Former Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was formally ratified as the national president of the Janata Dal (United) during the party’s National Council meeting in Patna on Sunday, as senior leaders also hinted at a larger future role for his son, Nishant Kumar.
The development came alongside the party’s State Council meeting, which reaffirmed Umesh Kushwaha as the president of the JD(U)’s Bihar unit.
Nitish Kumar arrived at the party headquarters amid a celebratory atmosphere, with party workers greeting him with flowers, drumbeats and slogans in support of the veteran leader. Following the conclusion of the meetings, he returned to his official residence at 7 Circular Road.
National Council Ratifies Nitish Kumar’s Appointment
Addressing reporters after the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said the National Council had formally approved Nitish Kumar’s appointment as the party’s national president.
He also highlighted Nishant Kumar’s participation in the proceedings, saying the party was looking ahead to strengthening its organisational structure and electoral prospects.

Party Leaders Signal Larger Role For Nishant Kumar
Much of the political discussion surrounding Sunday’s meetings centred on Nishant Kumar, whose public appearances at party events in recent months have fuelled speculation about his future role in politics.
Speaking after the State Council meeting, minister Sunil Kumar said there was broad agreement within the party that Nishant Kumar would remain actively involved in organisational activities.
“He has the potential for future leadership and will be entrusted with significant responsibilities in the coming days,” Sunil Kumar said.
The minister added that Nishant Kumar would help communicate the achievements of Nitish Kumar’s governments to the people of Bihar and strengthen the party’s outreach efforts.
Health Minister Mangal Pandey and other senior JD(U) leaders have previously indicated that Nishant Kumar could take on a more prominent role within the organisation.
JD(U) MLA Komal Singh also described Nishant Kumar as “a leader of the future”, reflecting growing support among sections of the party for his greater involvement.

Umesh Kushwaha Retains State Leadership
Earlier in the day, the JD(U) State Council meeting endorsed Umesh Kushwaha’s continuation as state president.
Party leaders discussed organisational matters, upcoming political challenges and strategies to strengthen the party’s presence across Bihar.
Supporters said Kushwaha’s reappointment reflected the leadership’s confidence in his ability to manage the party’s affairs in the state.
Brief Altercation At Meeting Venue
The otherwise celebratory event witnessed a brief disturbance during security checks at the entrance to the State Council meeting.
According to witnesses, a verbal altercation broke out between a female party worker and security personnel after she objected to the manner in which the security screening was being conducted.
The situation was brought under control shortly afterwards, and the meeting proceeded without further disruption.
