Patna: Authorities in Patna have imposed strict restrictions on the use of laser lights and late-night DJ music near the city’s airport following a potentially dangerous incident involving a passenger aircraft. The move comes after a Pune-Patna flight reportedly lost balance during landing on Thursday evening when a laser beam struck the cockpit—a moment that officials say could have led to a serious accident.
In response, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) convened an emergency meeting with local law enforcement on Friday, issuing directives to Station House Officers (SHOs) and Sub-Divisional Police Officers (SDPOs). The new rules apply particularly to police station jurisdictions close to the airport, including Phulwarisharif, Gardanibagh, and the Secretariat area.
According to the SSP’s order, any device that emits laser light is now strictly prohibited in the vicinity of the airport. Additionally, those wishing to host wedding ceremonies or other public functions involving DJs or lighting must first obtain permission from their local police station. Organisers will be required to provide assurances that no light or sound from the event will affect flight operations.
A key stipulation is the curfew on music. DJs must cease playing by 10 pm, and event organisers have been made to sign formal bonds committing to this rule. Many DJ operators, brought in for a briefing by local police, have taken written oaths pledging compliance.
“If these directives are violated, strict legal action will be taken,” a senior police officer confirmed.
The crackdown underscores growing concern over aviation safety in densely populated urban areas where celebratory lighting and sound systems can interfere with flight paths. While similar bans exist near other Indian airports, Patna’s measures follow an especially close call, which officials say highlighted the urgency of enforcement.
The city’s police have been tasked with closely monitoring compliance in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, event planners are being advised to prioritise safety over spectacle.
