Patna: Bihar is unlikely to get any relief from the ongoing cold wave for the next two days, according to the Meteorological Center. Westerly winds blowing from Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are bringing chilly conditions to the state.
A yellow alert for dense fog has been issued in 18 districts, with minimum temperatures expected to drop by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists warn that the cold is likely to intensify as temperatures dip further.
The weather, which had been relatively normal over the past two days with sunny spells during the day, took a sharp turn on Tuesday. Dense fog blanketed several districts, including Patna, during the morning hours. The fog intensified at night, causing significant disruption to air travel.
Indigo flights arriving from Delhi and Mumbai were diverted after reaching Patna due to poor visibility. Approximately 320 passengers were affected. Indigo flight 6E5008, traveling from Delhi to Patna with 152 passengers, including Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, was forced to return to Delhi.
The Meteorological Center has attributed the cold wave to western disturbances, which are bringing icy air from the mountains. The active ‘La Niña’ phenomenon is also contributing to the extreme weather. Moisture and cold air carried by the jet stream from the sea level are exacerbating the situation.
