Chhapra: On the banks of the Saryu river in Bihar’s Chhapra district, a solemn tribute has taken shape in the form of sand. Renowned sand artist Ashok Kumar, moved by the recent Ahmedabad plane crash, has created a poignant piece of art that seeks to channel the nation’s collective grief and resilience. The crash of an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner in Ahmedabad, which claimed the lives of 241 people and left the country in mourning, has triggered an outpouring of solidarity across India. Among the most striking responses is the sand sculpture created by Kumar, a celebrated figure in North Bihar’s art circles. “This is not just a sand sculpture,” said Kumar. “It is a symbol of shared sorrow. Through my work, I wanted to convey that art has the power to awaken human sensitivity, especially in times of tragedy.”
The sculpture features a sand-carved aircraft, encircled by oil lamps—an image designed to evoke both remembrance and reverence. Beneath the artwork, a simple yet powerful message reads: “On this black day, we are all one. Let us all share the grief and support each other.” According to Ashok Kumar, the installation is meant to serve as more than a tribute. “It is an emotional bridge,” he explained. “A way to unite people in empathy and remind them of their humanity.” Across Bihar, people have taken to social media to express their condolences, many sharing images of the artwork and echoing the call for unity and compassion. A son of Saran district, Kumar has long used sand as his medium to respond to both celebration and tragedy. His latest piece underscores the role of art not merely as expression, but as a form of communal healing. “This black day will be remembered,” he said, “but I hope my work can offer even a sliver of comfort to the grieving families and remind the country that we are together in this.”
