Siwan: In a police encounter carried out under “Operation Langda” in Bihar’s Siwan district early Monday morning, an accused involved in the Jamapur jewellery shop robbery case was shot in the legs, police sources said. The bullet reportedly pierced through both knees of the accused.
However, the Siwan police have so far refrained from issuing any official statement regarding the encounter.
The injured accused has been identified as 26-year-old Ankit Kumar Singh, son of Srinivas Singh and a resident of Chandpur Ghurghat village under Siswan police station limits. He was allegedly involved in the robbery at a jewellery shop in Jamapur Bazaar under Ziradei police station area earlier this month, in which valuables worth around Rs 20 lakh were looted.
Ankit was brought to Siwan Sadar Hospital at around 3 am in an injured condition. Doctors provided primary treatment before referring him to Patna for further medical care.
A doctor at the hospital said the accused had suffered bullet injuries in both knees, but the bullets had passed through and his condition was stable. After initial treatment, he was shifted to Patna.
Heavy police deployment was seen at the hospital premises during the treatment and transfer of the accused.
Daylight Robbery At Jewellery Shop
The robbery took place on May 5 at Om Sai Jewellery Shop in Jamapur Bazaar. According to police and local residents, five armed criminals arrived on two Apache motorcycles and entered the jewellery shop during the daytime.
The accused allegedly threatened those present at gunpoint and looted around 300 grams of gold, nearly 9 kilograms of silver ornaments and cash, with the total value estimated at around Rs 20 lakh.
After carrying out the robbery, the criminals allegedly opened indiscriminate fire while fleeing the spot to prevent anyone from chasing them. Witnesses claimed around 10 rounds of firing were carried out, creating panic across the market area.
During the chaos, local residents managed to catch one of the accused and allegedly beat him up. An angry mob also set his motorcycle on fire.
Police officials later reached the spot in large numbers. According to reports, a police camp was located nearly 500 metres away from the crime scene at the time of the incident.
