Bhagalpur/Patna:The Bihar Animal Husbandry Directorate has stepped up efforts to establish 500-capacity heifer stations and artificial insemination (AI) centres in nine divisional headquarters districts, including Bhagalpur.
According to officials, district administrations have been asked to provide 20 to 30 acres of land free of cost for the proposed facilities. The government expects the project to strengthen livestock infrastructure and improve dairy production across the state.
Districts identified for the project
In a letter issued by Sunil Kumar Thakur, Joint Director (Animal Health) at the Animal Husbandry Directorate, the project has been proposed for Bhagalpur, Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Saran, Darbhanga, Purnia, Saharsa and Munger.
The directorate said the centres are aimed at modernising animal husbandry infrastructure and expanding access to improved breeding facilities.
Delays linked to pending land transfer
Officials said the directorate had earlier written to the concerned districts on February 23, 2025, requesting them to identify and transfer suitable land at the earliest.
However, the required reports have not yet been submitted by several districts, delaying progress on the project.
The directorate stated that the absence of land allocation has stalled the establishment of the proposed heifer stations. District administrations have now been urged again to complete the identification and transfer process without delay.
Expected benefits for livestock farmers
Officials and sector experts said the project could support the rearing of improved cattle breeds and contribute to higher milk production.
The proposed AI centres are also expected to provide livestock farmers with better access to modern breeding services and technical support, potentially improving incomes in rural areas.
Employment opportunities likely in rural areas
Experts believe the project could generate employment opportunities linked to dairy and allied activities in rural regions. Small businesses connected to livestock and dairy production may also benefit if the centres become operational.
In Bhagalpur, the project is being seen as a significant step towards strengthening the local animal husbandry sector and rural economy.
