Patna: Dr. Thiyagarajan S. M. has directed officials to strengthen public relief measures as temperatures continue to rise across Patna district. The administration has commissioned drinking water kiosks at 400 locations, including road intersections, markets and crowded public spaces across 17 urban local bodies and 26 administrative blocks.
The facilities are intended to provide clean, chilled drinking water throughout the day to passersby, rickshaw pullers, labourers and shopkeepers, according to district officials.
Shelter Homes For Homeless And Outdoor Workers
The administration has also operationalised 15 shelter homes to offer temporary relief to people exposed to prolonged heat. These include homeless residents as well as workers spending extended hours outdoors.
Officials said the shelters are equipped with shaded resting areas and access to cold drinking water to reduce the impact of the ongoing heatwave.
Rural Water Supply Under Monitoring
Dr Thiyagarajan said ensuring uninterrupted access to drinking water remains the district’s priority. The administration has also arranged water points at 12 locations for animals as part of the summer preparedness plan.
In rural areas, the Public Health Engineering Department has deployed 46 mobile teams to repair non-functional hand pumps. Two additional dedicated teams have been assigned in eastern and western divisions to restore water supply systems at schools and other public institutions.
Tankers Deployed In Low Water Areas
Officials said executive officers in urban areas have been instructed to maintain hand pumps and ensure drinking water kiosks are functional at key public sites such as schools, bus stands, anganwadi centres, panchayat buildings and local markets.
The district’s Disaster Management Department has been tasked with supplying water through tankers in areas where hand pumps are unavailable or groundwater levels have dropped significantly. The Deputy Development Commissioner has been asked to monitor the situation regularly across the district.
