Patna: Independent Purnea MP Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, was taken to hospital late on Friday after his health reportedly worsened following his arrest by Patna police in a 31-year-old case.
Police first shifted Yadav to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) on Friday night, where he was kept under observation. Early on Saturday morning, his condition deteriorated further, prompting his admission to the emergency ward of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) under police protection.
Doctors at PMCH said the MP complained of back pain, chest discomfort, headache, anxiety and a rapid heartbeat. Preliminary examinations revealed elevated blood pressure, following which he was placed under observation and administered saline and medication.
Medical teams conducted a series of tests, including electrocardiogram (ECG), ultrasound and continuous monitoring of vital signs. After initial assessments, Yadav was referred to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology (IGIC) for specialised cardiac evaluation.
According to hospital authorities, ECG, echocardiography and precautionary CT angiography reports were found to be normal. PMCH superintendent Dr Rajeev Kumar Singh said on Saturday evening that Yadav’s condition was stable after all necessary examinations had been completed.
Arrest and movement timeline
According to official accounts, Patna police reached Yadav’s residence at around 10pm on Friday night. He was arrested shortly after midnight and taken to IGIMS by 12.45am. On Saturday morning, he was moved to PMCH for further treatment, produced in the civil court in the afternoon and later sent to Beur central jail under judicial custody. He was brought back to PMCH on Saturday evening after completing jail formalities.
The process of admitting him to the prisoners’ ward was under way late Saturday night, hospital officials said.
Allegations of negligence
Yadav’s personal secretary alleged that the MP was kept in a hospital corridor for nearly half an hour after being brought back from Beur jail and claimed that adequate facilities were not being provided. Supporters of the MP have also accused authorities of negligence in his medical care.
Hospital officials, however, denied the allegations, maintaining that all required medical protocols were followed and that treatment was provided without delay.
Yadav was arrested after a court warrant was issued in connection with a case dating back to the mid-1990s. The case has taken on political overtones, with opposition leaders alleging vendetta, a charge the state government has denied.
