Patna: Senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bihar have condemned comments made by MP Pappu Yadav, describing them as offensive to women and calling for a public apology.
At a joint press conference in Patna, state minister Shreyasi Singh, along with party leaders Anamika Singh, Sangeeta Kumari and Maithili Thakur, said the remarks amounted to an attack on women’s dignity and should not be tolerated in public discourse.
Singh said the comments sent a “wrong message to society” and undermined the role and contribution of women in politics and beyond. She urged Yadav to issue an unconditional apology “to the women of the country” and said the matter should not be trivialised.
The controversy has intensified political tensions in the state, with BJP leaders questioning the response of opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal. Singh called on Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav to clarify their positions, asking whether they supported the MP’s statement.
Anamika Singh, a member of the legislative council, described the remarks as a “serious issue”, adding that they reflected a broader mindset rather than an isolated comment. “Such statements are unacceptable and have wider social implications,” she said.
The BJP leaders also noted that Yadav’s wife is an MP, suggesting she too should respond to the controversy. They argued that statements perceived as derogatory risk undermining the progress made by women across sectors.
The incident has sparked renewed debate over political rhetoric and accountability, with calls from BJP leaders for stronger action and clearer standards in public life.
