Patna: Patliputra Junction in Bihar’s capital Patna is set to witness a major transformation in the coming years as Indian Railways moves ahead with large-scale redevelopment work. Under the Ministry of Railways’ Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the station is being modernised to improve passenger facilities, increase capacity and reduce the burden on the already crowded Patna Junction. At the same time, a modern Patliputra Coaching Complex is being built near the station for the maintenance of Vande Bharat trains and other modern railway coaches.
Railway officials say the redevelopment of Patliputra Junction will make it a strong alternative to Patna Junction. The station is important because it connects North and South Bihar and serves lakhs of passengers from Patna and nearby districts. It also provides smooth connectivity between the Danapur and Sonpur divisions, making travel easier for long-distance passengers as well as daily commuters. The station also has historical importance as it is linked to the ancient city of Patliputra, now known as Patna.
The Railway Board included Patliputra Junction in the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme in 2024. Under this project, work worth Rs 49.30 crore has been proposed for the financial year 2026-27. The redevelopment plan includes improving station infrastructure, enhancing safety measures, making the station more accessible and offering better amenities to passengers. Railway officials believe the upgraded station will provide a smoother and more comfortable travel experience.
At present, Patliputra Junction is already one of the busiest stations in Bihar. Around 33 pairs of Mail and Express trains and 10 pairs of Passenger trains originate from or pass through the station. It has five platforms and handles around 21,734 passengers every day. In the financial year 2025-26, the station earned an average daily revenue of Rs 7.58 lakh through unreserved tickets and Rs 31.26 lakh through reserved tickets. These figures show how important the station has become in the region.
Alongside the station redevelopment, construction of the Patliputra Coaching Complex is progressing quickly. This new facility will play an important role in the maintenance and servicing of Vande Bharat trains. The project was first estimated at Rs 199.36 crore, but the revised and approved cost is now Rs 283.16 crore. The complex will have an administrative building, three stabling lines, one pit line, one washing line, two workshop lines and three inspection bay lines.
Once both projects are completed, Patliputra Junction is expected to emerge as a major railway and maintenance hub in Bihar. The development will not only improve travel facilities for passengers but also strengthen the railway network in Patna and nearby regions. In the future, Patliputra Junction may become one of the most important and modern railway stations in the state.
